Mom, I can’t find my socks or the kingdom of Heaven!

What is the Kingdom of Heaven? Here’s what scripture says. (FYI: I usually use the NIV and/or The Voice)

Luke 13:18-21 “Do you want to understand the kingdom of God? Do you want Me to tell you what it’s like? It’s like a mustard seed that someone took and planted in his garden. That tiny seed grew and became a tree so large that the birds could fly in and make their nests in its branches. Do you want me to tell you what the kingdom of God is like? It’s like some yeast which a woman hid within a huge quantity of flour; soon the whole batch of dough was rising.”

Luke 17:20-21 Once, having been asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied “The kingdom of God does not come with you careful observation, nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is within (or possibly among) you.”

Matthew 13:44-49 “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure that is hidden in a field. A crafty man found there treasure buried there and buried it again so no one would know where it was. Thrilled, he went off and sold everything he had, and then he came back and bought the field with the hidden treasure part of the bargain.

Or the kingdom of heaven is like a jeweler on the lookout for the finest pearls. When he found a pearl more beautiful and valuable than any jewel he had ever seen, the jeweler sold all he had and bought that pearl, his pearl of great price.

Or think of it this way: the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was cast into the sea, a net that caught a world of flickering fish. When the net was full, the fishermen hauled it to shore. They separated the good fish from the bad, placing the good fish in a bucket and throwing out the inedible fish.”

The kingdom of Heaven is like a tiny mustard seed, it’s like tiny yeast, it’s not easily seen, it’d hidden in a field. If it’s not easily seen then it must be searched for, perhaps that’s why Jesus says in Matthew 6:33 “Seek first the kingdom of God..” Seek it, search for it. I stated in the first blog of this series how it wasn’t so much finding the answer that brought revelation, but the process of seeking it out. If you’re looking for a missing sock and you don’t find it, you keep looking for it, your mind and your attention and your focus stays on that sock. In Matthew 6 Jesus is also telling his disciples not to worry about anything, don’t worry about money or clothes or even food. How many of us successfully do this? Seriously. But our King says to us “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and then all these things will be given to you too.

I have a vision board at home. If you’re not familiar with the term it’s simply a posterboard, or in my case, a whiteboard, that you put pictures and words and whatever you want on it for the desires of your heart. So, for example, I have a picture of a BMW M Roadster in Interlagos blue on mine, along with a picture of my community, a picture of two sheep, and in one corner I have written “a healed family.” So my vision board would show you that the desires of my heart are, yes, a car, but it’s a not just a car people. It’s art on wheels! It’s a very first world desire, I am quite aware, and I will not cry if I never have it again. You’d also see that I desire for my family to be healed in their relationships, this is my entire family and you’d see my desire to be a Shepard in the kingdom with the picture of two sheep. At the very center though I have written in big letters THE KINGDOM OF GOD. This is a reminder to me of Matthew 6:33, that if I focus on God and his righteousness, if I live by his commandments then he says that all these other things will come along with it. (I highly suggest creating your own vision board.)

Have you ever gone looking for that lost sock, maybe it was lost keys, maybe something else, maybe you were searching for days, your attention almost always on that thing you were looking for. In the search of that lost sock have you ever come across other things you forgot about or were like “Hey, I’ve been looking for that!” I think it’s like that. A vision board works at such a deeper level, a much deeper level than most people are aware of. Wouldn’t it be awesome if we could pull anything we wanted towards us? What if I told you that I believe you can?
