Gospels: There Can Be Only One

The stranger looked at him surprised that he knew. John, the same. “How’d you know that?”

Your expression glazed over, almost in a trance as you recalled the dream, staring into nothing. “I had a dream. It was so real. A man, I think he was a man, an incredibly intimidating man. No, no he was something else, he almost glowed, as if the source of light in the room came from him. He told the other man what you just spoke about, that his wife would have a son named John. The man didn’t believe him so Gabriel, he said his name, shut his mouth.” Your eyes were squinting as if you were actually trying to focus in at something you were looking at in front of you. “He couldn’t speak until the child was born and he named him John as Gabriel had said. Many of the people of Israel will he bring back to the Lord their God. And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

My friend, you have been given a vision from God.” The stranger stood from his seat and extended his hand. “My name is Luke.”

You broke from your stare and shook his hand. “Right. Sorry. What’s going on?”

“Why don’t you take a seat?” John says as he pulls a chair out for you. The table has been set for four. You wonder who the fourth person is. “It’s a lot isn’t it?”

“Yeah, you could say that. So, this child, John, is he the King?”

“No, no, no.” Luke responds. “John is born to prepare the way for the King, their relatives however, specifically a young woman would bear the child that would become the King. Her name was Mary. They actually spent time with each other for they were both pregnant during the same time.”

“So, wait…this immortal King was birthed by a mortal woman? How’s that work? Or is it like Highlander where if another immmortal kills you you then become immortal. Did somebody kill him first and then he became immortal?” There was a knock at the door and John got up to see who it was.

“Well, you’re kind of on the right path, but not exactly.” Luke responded. You could tell he was a precise man, the details were very important to him whereas John seemed to see the underlying meanings in things. The more time you spent with John the more you realized that to be very true.

You place your hand over your eyes. “Look, there’s a lot of weird stuff happening lately, this virus, zombies for crying out loud, a dream that tells me exactly what you guys are talking about, a supposed immortal King, the strange feelings I’m getting…it’s a lot to wrap my mind around.”

“Well that’s just the beginning. You haven’t seen nothing yet. I’ll show you how what we’re talking about goes all the way back and I mean all the way.” The new comer extended his hand. “Matthew, pleasure to meet you.”

“I think I can take him back too there Matt.” John said playfully. “But let’s eat.”
