Gospels: The Rising Son

You woke. What time was it? It was still dark outside. It was yet morning. Turning to your side you ran the dream through your head again, this one like the one before. The same man had been present, this angel named Gabriel. “How could they know this would happen?” You rose from the small bed. “How could they control your very dreams? Who were these people?” You were wide awake now, might as well get up.

The house was quiet and looking through the kitchen window you could see the sky just begin to lighten. The sun was rising. You heard soft footsteps down the stairs and recognized John in the reflection of the window. He already had coffee in his hand. He stood beside you and spoke softly. “The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it. There came a man who was sent by God; his name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to every man.

“You know what I dreamed don’t you?”

“We prayed for most of the night that He would show you the truth so you would know that it did not come from a mans mouth, but from His.” John replied.

“I saw Gabriel. I saw him speaking to a young woman, telling her she would have a baby even though she was a virgin. The baby was to be named Immanuel.” You never took your gaze from the rising son as you spoke. Even as the words exited your mouth you struggled to believe them, but you weren’t sure why. Believing the world was created, as you did, surely allowed such things, but it was a paradigm shift in thinking. It was recognizing the truth, that you weren’t a human, you were a spirit in a human body. You’d always believed this, but somehow the ramifications of it all never really came home. Your spirit was more you than your body was. Your body would wither and die eventually, but your spirit would continue on. A spiritual something created all of this, hallowed is His name, orchestrated all of this. “But why, why go through all of this?”

Luke’s voice came from the staircase. “Because of the tender mercy of our God by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace.
